The 8th Anniversary of a Genocide (a rant)

March 19, 2011

20th March 2003, under the guise of the 'War Against Terror' and democracy; the decimation of the cradle of civilisation, Iraq/ Mesopotamia began. It is more than the over 1 million dead or the over 2 million displaced. This was and still is, a deliberate destruction of a nation. It is after all STILL occupied. And what has happened in those 8 years?

Women in Fallujah are advised by doctors "not to conceive" because of the Depleted Uranium (that is used in weaponary and tanks) is in the atmosphere, in its sinister particle dust. The Depleted Uranium has been cited in a massive increase in birth deformities and cancers. Some reports have suggested that it is changing the gender balance of Fallujah; with reports of a dramatic fall in live births of males and severe deformities in girls. It is hard today for researchers to even look into this as Iraq is still under occupation and the US Government will not co-operate. It is worth noting that there are similar reports from US Veterans of the effect of Depleted Uranium.

The occupation has destroyed Iraqi culture and society. The literacy rate has plummeted to 25%! This was a country with an almost full literacy rate before 2003. Why? Because the sectarian violence has forced many families to keep children, especially girls, at home. Because the Maliki puppet 'government' keeps siphoning off funds meant for widows so children have to work. Because the militias are harassing girls and blowing up girl's schools. And Iraq is STILL under occupation.

The Assyrian Orthodox Church is virtually extinct in Iraq. These are the real Christians... in Iraq since the 1st century. Now the Christian overseers of the US/ UK have destroyed them. They were supposed to protect them, they are the occupiers. There was NO Christmas in Iraq in 2010... they fled. And no one even noticed.

And every single day in Iraq... people, mostly young Sunni men, are rounded up, raped, tortured, disappeared and murdered. Every day, there is a suicide bomb, an assassination, helicopter gunship attack. Every day, Iraq bleeds. Even in the recent protests, police trained by the democratic occupiers used live rounds on protesters. The protesters were demanding food, water, services. Even journalists were injured and killed. And no one noticed.

Electricity and water supply is doled out sparingly and according to the sectarian community you happen to live in. If you are a Sunni, you'll be lucky to receive 5 hours a day. It is worth noting from the Iraqi's I speak to; before 2003, no one knew if you were Sunni or Shia. You were just an Iraqi.

I could go on with this but the question we in West need to ask is this. How could we ignore this? How can we just sit by and let this happen in our name? Why are we letting our governments, siphon off our nations resources to kill and destroy a people that did absolutely NOTHING to us? Iraq might have had a dictator but why kill over 1 million innocent civillians?

I believe Iraq is our skeleton in the closet... it betrays every single delusion we have about ourselves. About being fair minded, for human justice, for allowing a nation to flourish and make the best of their people. I remember studying the Nazi Holocaust... I saw the film of Buchenwald where unimaginable horrors were done to innocent people. I read the accounts of survivors and of how Hitler mainpulated the media to bring down the Nazi terror on their own people and other nations. I heard everyone gasp and say "How could they let this happen?", "Or I would've done something" Or "Never Again".

But we have done exactly the same thing the German citizen did then. And we did it to Iraq.

Never forget...
