In addition to Malcolm X and Ho Chi Minh, today is also the birthday of long-time activist Yuri Kochiyama. Ms. Kochiyama and her family were sent to a concentration camp in Jerome, Arkansas during WWII.

This birthday was Yuri's 90th! Phenomenal to see how influential she still is! Bay Area choreographer, and long-time Asian-American arts advocate Claudine Naganuma has taken great inspiration from Ms. Kochiyama in her latest work "reveal FREEDOM". From recent months of conversation with this renowned human rights activist, Ms. Naganuma has created both a perspective of U.S. history and thought provoking questions regarding current events, packaged within a sophisticated multi-disciplinary dance. dNaga, danceNAGANUMA is a multi-cultural, multi-generational company celebrating it's 10th Anniversary Season of making politically and culturally important work in Oakland, CA. The work opens June 3rd through June 5th, 2011 at the Laney College Theater in Oakland.
